‘Precious’ is a good quality 13.2hh brown mare with some white on both her
hind legs and a small star. We bought ‘Precious’ from a dealer's yard in London
in 1991. When I went to see her, she was fighting for her space in a small barn
along with many other horses and ponies. It was nice that she has so much spirit,
something every pony should have, and after driving her round Hyde Park corner,
we knew that we wanted her. She
is
a very intelligent and brave riding and driving pony. She has won many prizes
in driving classes, but mostly in combined driving trails during the 1990’s,
quickly going out of novice pony classes into open pony classes. ‘Precious’
is happy as a Single, Pair, and as the Tandem leader.
She
also loved hunting and gymkhanas in our more youthful days. We have bred two
foals from ‘Precious’: Globetrotter Mosquito and Globetrotter Nightingale, both
proving to follow in their mothers good character, and conformation, also enjoying
many equine disciplines.
We
gave ‘Precious’ a rest from breeding for 2004/5, and enjoyed riding and driving
her around the local green lanes called Chemins, which are everywhere in this
unspoiled countryside. She also helped the young gelding in their ridden training
by giving confidence on the roads and tracks, and also acting as ‘auntie’ to
the youngstock sometimes. We put Precious with our grey stallion Murthwaite
Tikka, and she is in foal for summer 2008.
Precious and my daughter did some Trec training in March and April, then took part in their first TREC event on the 26th March 2006 at Alloue in the Charente doing very well and enjoying themselves greatly. They went to their next Trec event on the 7th May near Cognac in the Charente, again they both did well, and Precious received much interest. As summer draws closer competitions and events are not as often because of the extreme heat, but for the month of May Precious with one of the other ponies (Mr Darcy) took part in randonnées every weekend. Precious did her final Trec competition for the year on the 11th June, being placed 3rd. She has done alot of good advertising for the breed, and hopefully more Fells will be seen doing Trec competitions. Precious spent the later summer months out with the youngstock and broodmare herd, she has now been brought back into light work, she was 3rd in the Ridden Class & 2nd in the Handy Pony competition at the 2nd AFPF Fell Pony Breed Show. We attended a small 1 day driving competition at Saillet sur Vienne on the 24th September, which was good fun, Precious was 8th out of 30 turnouts, so a great result. She enjoyed attending a couple of randonnées last autumn and continues the breed promotion here in France.
